Episode #284
Do We Need to Fear Saturated Fats? with Dr Damian Kristoff
In today’s episode we are joined by Dr Damian Kristof to explore saturated fats in pregnancy, off to back of an article titled “Mother’s higher fat diets linked with long term health of infants”. Now, this was in no way credible research, but it’s information being spread by mainstream media that is contributing to our continual confusion around saturated fats, so it was extremely important to debunk. Join Damo & I as we teach you how to navigate such articles, the problems with studies centred around dietary questionnaires and food recall, and the significant issues that arise when food quality is ignored (such as when meat pies are compared to avocados). We obviously agree that what a mother eats during pregnancy impacts the future health of her baby, but we absolutely have to stop the fear around natural whole foods. Let’s dive in.

Since recording this episode, the following research has been released:
“Whole-fat dairy, unprocessed meat, eggs and dark chocolate are SFA-rich foods with a complex matrix that are not associated with increased risk of CVD. The totality of available evidence does not support further limiting the intake of such foods”. More here - DOI: 10.1016/j.jacc.2020.05.077
